The Toony Bin's character design challenge this week was for Cereal Mascots. I figured most people would do Toucan Sam, Snap Crackle and Pop, Tony the Tiger, stuff like that. So, I found a site that has tons of cereal mascots on it as a reference. I saw these two characters, Klondike Pete and his donkey, Thorndike, from a cereal I barely remember called Crunchy Nuggets. The original illos of them were pretty great, actually. I don't think I improved on them one bit! LOL
Really, I just thought they looked fun to draw, and wanted to play around with a couple of new Photoshop brushes for the coloring. I think there's some interesting things I learned with the brushes, but I have a long way to go with them before I do a convincing watercolor look. Actually, this looks a good bit like colored markers now that I look at it. Anyway...

Yes, markers! Exactly. Okay, I know from your post that you wanted a more watercolor-like look but it's still great. In my experience it's actually kind of tough to get a Photoshop design to look like something other than a photoshop design, if you know what I mean.
BTW, I got Sketchbook on your recommendation. It's very interesting but I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting used to the interface. I DO like the fact that it gives you a lot more screen "real estate" to work with that Photoshop, however.
Yeah, I REALLY like drawing in Sketchbook. Glad you're liking it overall.
